Information about cardiothoracic transplantation
Both essential for life, the heart and lungs are transplanted in seven cardiothoracic transplant centres in the UK. Two cardiothoracic centres transplant paediatrics.
This section of the site describes aspects of cardiothoracic transplantation in the UK, and the role of NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) in facilitating these programmes.
NHSBT is supported in its facilitation by clinical input from members of the Cardiothoracic Advisory Group, which has lead on the modernising of matching and offering of hearts and lungs to patients including the development of new urgent and super-urgent allocation schemes.
