Expressions of interest

Expressions of interest invited for consultant kidney clinicians with an interest in transplantation who work in non-transplanting centres to join the NHSBT Kidney Advisory Group.

About the Kidney Advisory Group

NHS Blood and Transplant (NHSBT) host organ specific advisory groups constituted by clinical leaders, wider multi-disciplinary team representation and commissioners. The Kidney Advisory Group (KAG) is a statutory committee that advises NHSBT in all aspects of organ transplantation to ensure equity of access and best outcomes for all patients. The committee works with clinicians, scientists, statisticians, commissioners, patients and lay representatives to review and develop policies, assess outcomes, and work with other stakeholders to improve outcomes for kidney patients.

The group will:

  • recommend (as necessary), promote and implement changes to the nationally agreed protocols
  • identify and promote areas of audit and research
  • respond to, advise on or implement aspects of donation and transplant policy that arise from legal and/or policy developments both within the UK and more widely.
  • monitor and report on clinical governance issues arising within transplantation

Why we are asking for applicants

Current membership of KAG has one clinical representative for each of the kidney transplant centres in England/Scotland/Wales and Northern Ireland.

In the UK, approximately 45% of end-stage renal disease patients are cared for in a non-transplanting renal unit.

The pathway needs for patients commencing their RRT journey in a non-transplanting units may differ from those in a transplanting unit and there is evidence of diminished access to pre-emptive listing and transplantation as well as LKD transplants for patients cared for in a non-transplanting unit compared to a transplant unit.

It is critical that the KAG clinical membership accurately identifies the needs of and provides advocacy for patients cared for at non-transplanting renal units. It is important that policy decisions meet the needs of both patients and staff at these centres. In 2021, KAG approved a proposal to extend membership to include two consultant nephrologists from non-transplanting Renal units in the UK. These representatives have now completed their term on KAG and NHS BT are looking for enthusiastic colleagues to carry on their work.

Expressions of interest are now being sought from consultant nephrologists with an interest in transplantation, working in non-transplanting Renal units. The 2 successful appointments will be formally inducted as voting members of KAG at the group’s next meeting in October 2025, with a tenure on the committee for 3 years. There is no remuneration attached to these posts.

When do members meet?

All KAG voting members are expected to attend committee meetings per year.

of the meetings are expected to be virtual and the 3rd in person, with papers circulated at 7 days before.
