Allocation zones
The current zonal based organ allocation systems for livers, hearts and lungs means that each designated transplant unit has a defined geographical zone associated with it. Organs from donors within that zone are allocated preferentially to the associated transplant unit to select the most appropriate candidate for transplant, with the exception of particular, more urgent, patients.
The allocation zones are reviewed annually by the organ specific advisory group. The size of each zone and the hospitals included in it is dictated by the transplant unit's percentage share of new registrations onto the national transplant list.
